How to Cut a Bare-Faced Tongue-and-Dado Joint

Lay out and cut the dado. We used a dado blade to cut the ¼″- wide dado for the drawer back shown above. We used the rip fence as a stopblock to index the cut and guided the workpiece with the miter gauge (because no through cut is being made, there is no risk of the waste piece binding).

Make the cheek cut for the rabbet. We used a shop-made tenoning jig (see here) to secure the workpiece as we made the cut.

Finish the rabbet by making the shoulder cut to remove the waste from the rabbet area. A miter gauge with an auxiliary fence is being used to guide the cut.
